Enjoy the Barbeque….But Slow Down to Remember & Give Thanks!

When we pause to remember those who gave everything, we're reminded of a powerful kind of love, the kind that puts others first. It’s the same love Jesus demonstrated when He went to the cross for us. Memorial Day not only honors those who died in service to our country but also points us to the ultimate example of sacrificial love: Jesus Christ, who gave His life so that we might live.

"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." (John 15:13)

At its core, Memorial Day is about sacrifice. It’s about brave men and women who said, “I’ll go,” fully aware that they might not return. They were real people, sons, daughters, moms, dads, friends—who gave their lives in service to something greater than themselves.

We also remember the families they left behind—the ones who received the folded flag, who face birthdays and holidays with an empty chair at the table. They carry on with quiet strength, holding memories closer than most of us can ever know.

Memorial Day challenges us to live with more gratitude—to not take our freedom or our faith for granted. Because both came at a cost. In a very real way, we walk on ground others died to protect.

So as the Memorial Day weekend ushers in the joys of summer—barbeques, laughter, and time with loved ones—take time to slow down. Remember, and give thanks.

“Lord, thank You for the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to this country. Thank You for their courage, for the freedom we enjoy, and for the example of sacrificial love they leave behind. Help us to live in a way that honors their legacy and reflects Your heart. Bring peace to our world, and let it begin in us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
